Belgium produce stunning fightback to knock out Senegal
Belgium pulled off one of the most dramatic comebacks of the 2026 World Cup, recovering from 2-0 down to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time in their Round of 32 clash in Seattle. Youri Tielemans was the hero, scoring twice — including a controversial penalty deep in stoppage time at the end of extra time — to send Belgium through to the last 16.
Senegal dominate the first half
Senegal looked the stronger side from the start and took a deserved lead in the 24th minute. Habib Diarra finished from close range after Belgium failed to deal with a Senegalese attack. It was a well-worked goal that exposed gaps in the Belgian defence.
Belgium struggled to create chances in the opening 45 minutes. Kevin De Bruyne was tightly marked, and Jeremy Doku found little space on the wing. Senegal’s midfield, anchored by Idrissa Gueye, controlled the tempo and won most of the second balls.
Sarr extends Senegal’s lead
Senegal doubled their advantage six minutes into the second half. Ismaila Sarr latched onto a precise through ball from Moussa Niakhaté and fired a right-footed shot into the bottom corner. At 2-0, it looked like Belgium’s World Cup campaign was over.
Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco responded with a flurry of substitutions. Romelu Lukaku had already come on at half-time for Charles De Ketelaere, and Dodi Lukebakio replaced Doku shortly after. Nicolas Raskin also entered for De Bruyne as Belgium shifted to a more direct approach.
Lukaku pulls one back
The substitutions made a difference. Belgium began to push Senegal deeper, and their pressure finally paid off in the 86th minute. Romelu Lukaku — Belgium’s all-time top scorer — found space on the right side of the six-yard box and fired a right-footed shot high into the net to make it 2-1.
Suddenly, the momentum shifted entirely. Senegal, who had looked comfortable for most of the match, were rattled. The Belgian fans inside Lumen Field found their voice.
Tielemans levels from Trossard’s assist
Three minutes later, Belgium completed the comeback in extraordinary circumstances. Leandro Trossard, who had been involved in a heated argument with Tielemans during a hydration break earlier in the half, delivered the assist. His cross found Tielemans unmarked in the centre of the box, and the midfielder powered a header into the bottom left corner to make it 2-2.
It was a remarkable moment — two players who had been visibly angry with each other combining to save their team’s tournament. The tension during the drinks break had been caught on camera, but the pair clearly channelled that emotion into something positive.
Controversial penalty wins it in extra time
With the match level at 2-2, both teams pushed for a winner in extra time. Sadio Mané was substituted for Nicolas Jackson in the 94th minute, and Trossard eventually made way for Amadou Onana in the 109th minute.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time at the end of extra time. In the 120th+5th minute, the referee pointed to the penalty spot after a VAR review. Tielemans stepped up and calmly converted, sending his right-footed shot into the top right corner to complete one of the most incredible comebacks in recent World Cup history.
What it means for both teams
Belgium advance to the last 16, where they will face a tough test. The Red Devils showed enormous character to fight back from two goals down, but they will need to address their defensive frailties if they want to go deeper in the tournament. Conceding twice to Senegal in the first 51 minutes will concern Tedesco.
For Senegal, it is a heartbreaking exit. They were the better team for large parts of the match and will feel they let a golden opportunity slip away. Pape Gueye’s announcement before the match that he would quit the national team until the coaching staff was replaced cast a shadow over their preparations, and the manner of this defeat will sting for a long time.
