Nottingham Forest are set to make a £45 million offer for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall, according to BBC Sport. The bid comes after Spurs rejected Forest’s initial approach of £38 million last week.
Who Is Lucas Bergvall?
Bergvall is a 20-year-old Swedish international who joined Tottenham in 2024 from Djurgarden in his home country. Despite his young age, he quickly made an impact in English football.
During his first Premier League season, Bergvall was named Tottenham’s Player of the Year. That same season, Spurs ended their 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League.
In April 2025, he signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until 2031. He has 14 caps for Sweden and represented his country at the 2026 World Cup, where Sweden were eliminated in the round of 32 by France.
Why Does Bergvall Want to Leave?
Despite his strong debut season, Bergvall’s situation at Tottenham changed under manager Roberto de Zerbi. The Swedish midfielder played limited minutes towards the end of last season and was often used outside his preferred number six position.
BBC Sport reports that Bergvall wants the move to the City Ground. After undergoing ankle surgery that kept him out for two months, he made 33 appearances last season but struggled to nail down a regular starting spot.
What Has Oliver Glasner Said?
New Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner addressed the transfer speculation during his first press conference on Thursday. While he did not mention Bergvall by name, he hinted at incoming signings.
“I have one strength and weakness, it’s impatience,” Glasner said. “Of course, I would have hoped they already trained with us on the other side.”
He added: “It’s impossible because the players we’re now talking to they play at the World Cup so are still on vacation. I’m pretty convinced we will have a few players joining us in Portugal.”
Forest are currently on a pre-season training camp in Portugal.
What Does This Mean for Nottingham Forest?
Forest are looking to rebuild their midfield after Elliot Anderson’s record-breaking move to Manchester City. However, the club has no plans for another 13-player, £180 million spending spree like last summer.
The approach this time is quality over quantity. In addition to a midfielder, Forest are also looking to sign a goalkeeper to support Matz Sels and John Victor, plus a striker to help Chris Wood, who turns 35 in December, and Igor Jesus.
Bergvall would be a statement signing for a club looking to establish themselves in the Premier League’s upper half under their new manager.
What to Watch
The £45 million fee shows how highly Bergvall is rated despite his limited playing time last season. At just 20 years old, he has already won a major European trophy and played at a World Cup.
If the deal goes through, it would represent a significant investment from Forest and a chance for Bergvall to get the regular football he craves. Tottenham, meanwhile, would lose one of their most promising young talents — raising questions about their own squad planning for the 2026-27 season.
Keep an eye on whether Spurs accept the improved offer or hold out for a higher fee.
